This year is different
A call to action in support of 5 May 2015 SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign, launched in 2009, and importantly to commemorate ten years of the WHO Clean Care is Safer Care programme 2005-2015

Show your commitment to the campaign in 2015 – take your photo with our new promotional board and post it on social media using #safeHANDS and you can mention @WHO. You can easily print it or download it to a tablet device.

  • Watch and use our new promotional video #safeHANDS.
  • Challenge 10 other health-care facilities to plan to take their photos with the promotional board.
  • You will be able to see your photograph on this website if you use #safeHANDS when posting on social media or you can upload your photo directly to the site.

Arrange a hand sanitizing relay in your organization and even try to break the world record! – between now and beginning of September 2015

We would like you to tell us if you are organising a hand sanitizing relay in support of the WHO 5 May 2015 call to action. We will use your contact information to provide more instructions for you and for Professor Didier Pittet to send you a congratulatory message upon completion of your relay. We will report on the number of hospitals around the world undertaking sanitizing relays but the name of your hospital will be kept confidential. It will take 1 minute for you to complete the requested information!

The hand sanitizing relay work is being led by the WHO Collaborating Centre (WCC) on Patient Safety (Infection Control and Improving Practices) at University Hospitals Geneva. Find brief instructions on how to do your hand sanitizing relay here – you can do your relay any time from now until September! You will receive more instructions and support if you complete the ‘Hand Sanitizing Relay Information Form’. Send any relay enquiries to handhygienerelay@who.int.

  • You can also take part in a pre and post relay global compliance project and even apply for a Guinness World Record through support from the WCC once you have completed the instruction form.
  • Challenge 10 other health-care facilities to undertake the hand sanitizing relay.

Register with the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign now if you haven’t already and you are taking part in any of the activities

  • Ask 10 other health-care facilities to register their commitment.

Ask your Ministry of Health or a senior member in your country’s government to send us, or post on social media (incorporating #safeHANDS), a few lines on their commitment to clean hands in health care

  • Many have pledged to Clean Care is Safer Care over the last 10 years.
  • What have you done, what are you doing now? Together let’s keep a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in health care.

Use the WHO hand hygiene improvement approach

  • Find a refreshed package of key tools here – coming soon.
  • Use two new WHO posters supporting prevention of catheter-related blood stream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonias through clean hands, to add to the one available on catheter-associated urinary tract infections – coming around 5 May.
  • Use all the WHO tools as part of the multimodal improvement strategy, to support the ongoing strengthening of health-care facilities and to demonstrate quality of care.
